Day Ten: “Triumph” — Turn Up the Contrast

Triumph comes in all shapes and sizes: Your short story, accepted for publication in your favorite magazine. Your baby’s first step. Or the reward at the end of a cold winter walk: a massive elm tree standing beautifully in the light.

“Art is the triumph over chaos” John Cheever

Triumph!

I made it
Past thirty
On my way back
Crossing the track
I hit
Forty!

Winning an uphill battle
Trying to avoid the cattle
But then I heard the rattle

Side tracked
I backed
To the curve
Only to observe
A shot tire
Oh I was so
In dire!

But an idea emerged
I tracked down the heard
And back in the race in a surge

Into the goal
Victorious soul
Cows in front
My bike a chariot
Quite the stunt
Which would impress
Even Harriet!

What a triumph
Indeed!

“Good night, good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow, that I shall say good night till it be morrow” William Shakespeare

Good Night from Suburbia Daily Photo

A good night to One and All!

Wishes,
That the sky on you won’t fall
That the neighbour won’t eat your meatball
That the cat a mouse inside won’t haul
That the kids won’t steal your football
That the computer an update won’t install
And,
That in your dreams you will have a ball

So,
A very good night to One and All!

“A short story is something that you can hold in your mind. You can really analyze how the entire thing works, like a machine” Chuck Palahniuk

 Could it be?

Could it be?
Can you see?
Is it true?
Who knew!

So what if it is
This wasn’t a quiz
It’s no one’s biz
If we go to the Ritz

Never mind
I’ll be fine
I got a dime
Let it chime

Out on the street
Dancing to the beat
Life oh so sweet
Oh what a treat

The lesson learnt
Don’t get burnt
Even if you weren’t
Dance ’till you aren’t

The White Cat in a Hat

The little white cat
With a black hat
Was taking a nap
On the kitchen mat

Her tail all curled
As she softly purred
Oblivious to the world
As it around her whirled

Something made her stir
Looking up with a stare
Straight up stood her fur
As she took off in a blur

The hat off tore
Landed on the floor
The cat was out the door
Heard was a loud roar

Shortest of Tales for Throwback Thursday

On Thursdays we walk down memory lane and dig deeply into the archives of Rantings Of A Third Kind. For these posts, I have chosen some of my personal favourites. Some of them may tickle the funny bone, some even provoke thoughts and some of them will give you a view of the world in photographs taken by yours truly.

This week, the archives have brought forth the shortest of tales, and really odd ones at that! Enjoy!

Once there was a Man

Once there was a man
Who did not understand
That the greatest of plans
Was already in his hands

So he went around town
Looking for his crown
His face in a big frown
Feelings of letting down

But when he saw a beggar
With the biggest smile ever
He suddenly turned around
And his smile finally found

Day Nine: “Double” — Rotate Your Image

Your twin sisters. Your neighbor’s two poodles. Your vision during a dizzy spell. Your doppelgänger. Double can be interpreted in many ways.

Two for the Double (WP Developing Your Eye II)

“I think I am seeing… double!!!”

Thorns by the Double

What do I spy
With my own little eye?

Thorns of plenty
Maybe even deadly
Someone call Wendy
She’ll be,
Green with envy

Sweets by the Double

Sweets by the double
Please call Hubble
Because I am in trouble
Please,
Someone burst this bubble!

Swans by the Double

What do I spy
With my own little eye?

Gliding on the waters
No, not sea-otters
Oh, my ears are ringing
Because
Two swans a singing
And a fly
In an apple tree

Day Eight: “Edge” — Straighten Your Image

At Ta Prohm, the jungle temple in the Angkor Wat complex in Cambodia, centuries-old carvings have fallen victim to time and tree roots. In some areas, walls still stand, their intact windows creating frames and portals. The solid, straight edges of the windows are a stark contrast to the stones that have tumbled down over time.

End of Stairs

If you follow the walker
To the end of the stairs
With a hop and skip
Your toes you may dip
Unrestricted
At the edge of the pier
Into a cooling liquid
