Shadows and light dancing in the Palouse

Christopher Martin's avatarChristopher Martin Photography

When I planned my Easter trip to the Palouse, I knew that I would make a couple of visits to Steptoe Butte.  It rises roughly 300 meters above the countryside allowing for an unobstructed view of the entire area.  That elevation gain provides a great perspective on the waves of farmland below.

The first morning that I drove up, when the butte came in sight I found it capped by a loose shroud of cloud.  After stopping to photograph that I headed up and was soon inside the cloud looking out at the sun rising over the clouds that had stacked up low along the horizon.

When the sunlight gently skipped across the rolling hillsides you could almost watch the color warm.  I enjoyed almost an hour of truly amazing light dancing with the shadows it created over the fields.  Those fields adding significantly to the views owing to their flowing lines, gentle patterns and…

Cloudy, With Low Chance of Rain

Posted in Simply Poetry

“Everyday life is like programming, I guess.
If you love something you can put beauty into it”
Donald Knuth

Cloudy, With Low Chance of Rain

Sometimes,
When it shines
It may also rain
In the skies
Onto the plane

You see,
It may be,
That the gods dined
Spilled some wine
Despite the weather fine
Not out of spite
Or us to smite
But just because the bright
Of the sunlight
Hit their eyes
The hand slipped
The chalice tipped
And the damage
Was done

Instead of whining
Of the gods’ fine dining
Just stand outside
With your mouth wide
And enjoy
The nature’s nectar
Maybe,
With a piece of cheddar
In this very fine
Weather

Ripples

Ripples

When it comes to you,
I am quite predictive
And yes,
Utterly and deeply committed
Even though,
I may feel a little conflicted

I know,
I am very addicted
Sometimes,
To the point of wicked
But only you,
My rippling dark brown liquid
Can make me
Totally uplifted

Which Way?

“Everyday life is like programming, I guess.

Which Way?

Should I have stayed,
Or should I have gone?

Which way was up,
Which way did the flow go?

Did I make the right turn,
When I should have taken left?

Was it a mistake,
Or was the end justified by the means?
Much may be at stake
Or so it usually seems

Did I read the sign correctly,
Or maybe,
It was just elementary?

“Do not cross the brook for water”
Finnish proverb

Dudes a-standing

Proud of being green
As in front of this white house I am seen
I try not lean
Because I am the dude a-standing
Trying hard not onto the ground a-landing

“Do not cross the brook for water”
Finnish proverb

Group a-hanging

We are the tough crowd
Hanging together green and proud
We usually sing very loud
Sometimes even scaring the cows
But sometimes we just meow
Especially, if the sky turns to a cloud

“Do not cross the brook for water”
Finnish proverb

Dudes a-standing

Up high on my pedestal
I really try not to fall
But if you throw me a ball
I will down myself haul
And shoot a great goal
Faster than you can it call

“Do not cross the brook for water”
Finnish proverb

Ladies a-leaning

One lady a-leaning
Two ladies a-leaning
If I keep on going
This will turn into a song
Just bang the gong
And in a flash I will be gone…
