Finnish National Anthem

“Our land, our land, our fatherland,
Sound loud, O name of worth!
No mount that meets the heaven’s band.
No hidden vale, no wavewashed strand.
Is loved, as is our native North. Our own forefathers’ earth.

Thy blossom, in the bud laid low,
Yet ripened shall upspring.
See! From our love once more shall grow
Thy light, thy joy, thy hope, thy glow!
And clearer yet one day shall ring The song our land shall sing.”

Johan Ludvig Runeberg

Runeberg torte: In honour of the Finnish poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg (1804–1877)

Runeberg torte is a Finnish pastry flavored with almonds and arrack or rum and it weighs about 100 grams. Raspberry jam inside a sugar ring is commonly placed on top of the tart.

The torte got its name from the Finnish poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg (1804–1877) who, according to legend, enjoyed the torte with punsch for every breakfast. Runeberg tortes are typically eaten only in Finland and are generally available in stores from the beginning of January to Runeberg’s birthday on February 5.

Delicious!

Sankta Lucia

In honour of the month of December and the day of Sankta Lucia (13.12.)

lucia main

“Natten går tunga fjät
rund gård och stuva;
kring jord, som sol förlät,
skuggorna ruva.
Då i vårt mörka hus,
stiger med tända ljus,
Sankta Lucia, Sankta Lucia”

“Night walks with a heavy step
Round yard and hearth,
As the sun departs from earth,
Shadows are brooding.
There in our dark house,
Walking with lit candles,
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia”

Sankta Lucia

The bearer of light
For the future to shine bright
With all her might
Like the shining white knight
Her sword will smite
All the anger and spite
The world to rewrite
Without war or fight

Vårt land

Vårt land, vårt land, vårt fosterland,
ljud högt, o dyra ord!
Ej lyfts en höjd mot himlens rand,
ej sänks en dal, ej sköljs en strand,
mer älskad än vår bygd i nord,
än våra fäders jord.

Vårt land är fattigt, skall så bli
för den, som guld begär,
en främling far oss stolt förbi;
men detta landet älska vi,
för oss med moar, fjäll och skär
ett guldland dock det är.

Vi älska våra strömmars brus
och våra bäckars språng,
den mörka skogens dystra sus,
vår stjärnenatt, vårt sommarljus,
allt, allt, vad här som syn, som sång
vårt hjärta rört en gång.

Our Land

Oh Our Land Finland Fatherland
Echo Loudly Golden Word
No Valley No Hill
No Water Shore More Dear
Than This Northern Homeland
This Precious Land Of Our Fathers
No Valley No Hill
No Water Shore More Dear
Than This Northern Homeland
This Precious Land Of Our Fathers
One Day From Your Bud
You Will Bloom
From Our Love Shall Rise
Your Hope Glorious Joy
And Once Your Song Fatherland
Higher Still Will Ring
From Our Love Shall Rise
Your Hope Glorious Joy
And Once Your Song Fatherland
Higher Still Will Ring

Giving Thanks

Give a little
Take a little
Put a little back
Be thankful for what
You already have

Meanwhile
You’ll never know
When the opportunities
Come a knocking
On your door

So a very
Happy Thanksgiving
To one
And All

“Winter is a season of recovery and preparation” Paul Theroux

Sunday, 22nd of November, Part One

On the 22nd day of November
The snow fall finally came
And one centigrade of minus degrees

The white dust on the ground
Everywhere to be found
Where the heck is my car
Couldn’t have left it far
Grabbed the snow shovel
Moving my muscles
Soon the path is clear
Feeling like a pioneer

On the 22nd day of November
The icy cold rain
Hit the bloody plane
Due to one centigrade of minus degrees

I just hope the roads won’t ice over
Or I’ll be prancing like a four leaf clover
Trying to cross the roads
In the early morning hours
On my way to work
Trying not to go berserk
When it’s really dark
Only dogs will bark

On the 22nd day of November
The snow fall finally came
The icy cold rain
Hit the bloody plane
Due to one centigrade of minus degrees

“Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather” John Ruskin

On the 21st day of November

On the 21st day of November
My true love sent to me
One centigrade of minus degrees

On the 21st day of November
My true love also sent to me
Lots of icy cold rain
Several snowflakes of dancing
And one centigrade of minus degrees

I wish for my true love to send to me
Many more warm degrees
Much of sunshine weather

Bleu Blanc Rouge
No time to sing the blues
It is the time to choose
Freedom

Blue, White, Red
The colours for which
So many have bled
Freedom

The three coloured symbol
In its presence we feel humble
Even though very simple
We can only think of
Freedom
