Red Eyes

Glowing red hot streaks of light
Staring, still scared to lose my sight
Instincts kicking in: Fight or flight

Getting closer and closer
Movement slower and slower
Breathing lower and lower

Questions, filling my mind
What kind of monsters do I find
Will they be bad or will they be kind

“Well, guess there is only one way to find out”
She said out loud
And then, she opened the box…

Sweet Cherries for The Daily Post

“Life is not a bowl full of cherries, there’s good and bad stuff” Fuzzy Zoeller

Sweet Cherries

Juicy and sweet
Quite the treat
When on the beat
In the summer’s heat
And well worth
The tweet

Sweet Cherries

Good things
Do grow on trees
If you look closely
The come in threes..

Or maybe twos
Or maybe
They do multiply
On the branches
Up high

Triumph! (WP Developing Your Eye II)

Day Ten: “Triumph” — Turn Up the Contrast

Triumph comes in all shapes and sizes: Your short story, accepted for publication in your favorite magazine. Your baby’s first step. Or the reward at the end of a cold winter walk: a massive elm tree standing beautifully in the light.

“Art is the triumph over chaos” John Cheever

Triumph!

I made it
Past thirty
On my way back
Crossing the track
I hit
Forty!

Winning an uphill battle
Trying to avoid the cattle
But then I heard the rattle

Side tracked
I backed
To the curve
Only to observe
A shot tire
Oh I was so
In dire!

But an idea emerged
I tracked down the heard
And back in the race in a surge

Into the goal
Victorious soul
Cows in front
My bike a chariot
Quite the stunt
Which would impress
Even Harriet!

What a triumph
Indeed!

Day Nine: “Double” — Rotate Your Image

Your twin sisters. Your neighbor’s two poodles. Your vision during a dizzy spell. Your doppelgänger. Double can be interpreted in many ways.

Two for the Double (WP Developing Your Eye II)

“I think I am seeing… double!!!”

Thorns by the Double

What do I spy
With my own little eye?

Thorns of plenty
Maybe even deadly
Someone call Wendy
She’ll be,
Green with envy

Sweets by the Double

Sweets by the double
Please call Hubble
Because I am in trouble
Please,
Someone burst this bubble!

Swans by the Double

What do I spy
With my own little eye?

Gliding on the waters
No, not sea-otters
Oh, my ears are ringing
Because
Two swans a singing
And a fly
In an apple tree

Day Eight: “Edge” — Straighten Your Image

At Ta Prohm, the jungle temple in the Angkor Wat complex in Cambodia, centuries-old carvings have fallen victim to time and tree roots. In some areas, walls still stand, their intact windows creating frames and portals. The solid, straight edges of the windows are a stark contrast to the stones that have tumbled down over time.

End of Stairs

If you follow the walker
To the end of the stairs
With a hop and skip
Your toes you may dip
Unrestricted
At the edge of the pier
Into a cooling liquid

Hand Rail

Hold on for your life
To the hand rail
Said the old wife
God forbid you to fail
You may end up
In dismay
Down the ledge
To the very edge
Of the dark waters
For the waves slaughter
