Blogging 201: Day Three: Get Read All Over
Today’s assignment: Make sure your site is mobile-friendly, and familiarize yourself with the features of responsive design.
Why? Because a responsive website looks great on all screen sizes, from computer to tablet to phone. Because there are mobile tools built in to WordPress.com — there’s no need to know web development to have a mobile-friendly site.
I have been using the WordPress application on both Samsung and Iphone for a while. Not really for writing, but reading and follow up. I don’t recommend typing on the small device for a lengthy time. Posting on them, especially picture related topics can be tricky, as it sometimes is even with a proper computer 😉 But I did manage to write a poem on the phone yesterday at lunch with the “one finger method”. Editing happened later on the “real” deal.
I have showcased my blog on several occasions on the phone application and the look and feel is right for such a device as well. The theme and widgets flow nicely even on a smaller screen. Best test to prove the point is to take a complete novice to both smart phones and the world of blogging. After a few minutes with application install and demo on how the blog works, they got the hang of it and are now regular followers 😉
Having a background in web design and code, I usually test with the pages on several browsers and types of screens. With the Visual Theme, I have finally realized the looks of my personal blog. Suits me, got a few compliments and fits to various screens!

Someone mentioned the other day that my blog is not iPhone friendly. I am not able to take Blogging 201 at this time. Would you be able to give me some tips on how to make it more friendly for an iPhone? I would appreciate it greatly.

I am taking 201 also and the best advice is to ask someone to check it from a mobile site. I’ll check from my iPad. Some themes are better than others.

I checked on my iPad and your font is tiny. You may need to choose another theme.

Thanks for the check and advice.
I am using Samsung S5 and both with browser and WP app the font is good for the type of screen both with and without reading glasses ;P It took me a lot of effort and trials and finally ended up with currently most suitable theme, so I am sticking with this one for now at least.

Cathy, thank you so much! I didn’t realize that some themes were better than others. Someone wrote me and said my site wasn’t mobile friendly, and that is why I asked. Gun Roswell sent me some websites to check out to make mine more friendly. If they don’t work, I’ll look into maybe another theme that will work better. Thanks again for taking the time to help! God Bless!

You’re welcome. I’m learning too! I tried almost all the (free) themes before settling on the one I have now.

You are up and running and your theme looks great. By the way I love the tagline to your blog.

I love the quote and image choice. I do 100% of my blogging from a small android phone since my laptop needs servicing. It definitely takes a toll on your hand. The WordPress app works great, with the downside being less features than you have online. So the posts look more basic (sans bells and whistles).

Thank you! I hear you, writing just a short poem on a phone is effort enough, not to mention uploading images to a post etc!

It’s tedious, but I do it just about every day. Hmm, maybe I DO have patience!
