Another year, another birthday, I guess

“Well, it’s another year and another birthday, but is still feel like the shabby nineteen year old person I once was“ Gun Roswell

Another year, another birthday, I guess

The writer of this ditty, found a photo of herself when she was an itty-bitty kiddy. Just a toddler seated in her moms lap, a proud parent I guess at that back then in the something somethings when life was so much simpler, at least if the smiles on the faces are any kind of inkling. So guess back then, I really had the world on a string. And adding to that the eagerness to dance and sing or at least perform in some fashion, from a few years on, all that looking back, seemed like a good deal to be inside of and some of the memories are just great, while others, well, those one can always fake, right!?

So, a few decades has now passed, since that selfie of sorts from the past and like the image it self, can last for a long, long time, despite being old and wrinkled, but not I! And yeah, guess I have to admit, that taking to account everything and all I am feeling fine, despite whatever thoughts of darkness might land on my own mind every now and again but hey, that is just time spent too much with myself. And certainly nothing to do with age as that is a simple number on the cake. But yeah, as sometimes in my slumber, bad thoughts occur, but hey, that is fine, as I am fine and most of those surround me are just fine so, putting on a smile for today at least and then a little later on, I will most certainly off of my b-day cake feast.

So whatever ranting this little ditty might be, I will keep on having my birthdays for, well, hopefully eternity. The next goal is set as a hundred and fifty. Yeah I know that sounds so, well science fiction-y. But as I have always planned on living forever, guess that is not such a impossible goal now or even ever.

Two Year Anniversary on WordPress

Today, it has been two years since I started my blog Rantings of a Third Kind here on WordPress.

“A poem a day keeps the shrink at bay”, is a great guideline to follow and it is has been working for me at least!

My advice, in case you asked, to all you bloggers and wanna be writers out there, is to set yourself some time aside each day and if nothing else, pour your mind flow onto the paper or as it is in these modern days, in bits and bytes. I know this may sound like cliched advice, but it’s better to force yourself to a routine of writing rather than postponing it for one reason or another. I know there are always excuses as to why not, but in the end, if you have a passion for writing, the excuse are just that – excuses. And do not be afraid to publish, good or bad, it’s all good in the end.

When in Rhyme do as the Rhymers do” Gun Roswell

The Gun Rap

My name is Gun
I am a lot of fun
Some call me ‘Nilla
I am here to chilla

Here are some facts
Seven to be exact
Guess that is the most
You’ll find about this host

I am a wannabe writer
And maybe a little brighter
Than you might think
While you let that sink

I will continue my rant
In the form of this chant
Even though I really can’t
Sing, dance or ant?

“What? Ant? That is not a verb!”
“I was trying to rhyme -erb”
“If you can’t rhyme, stay out of the kitchen”
“Why are you so bitchen?”
“Enough with the rhyme!”
“Fine! Now gimme a dime and lets get back to the rap!”

The three letters
Best defining my efforts
Photography, Poetry
And P…

“Oops, can’t say that out loud on television <smirks>!”
“We’re not on television! This is a written blog you dumbass!”
“Hey, you said ass! That is mighty sass of you!”
“Argh! I give up!”
“Great, now back to the rap!”

Well, the last of the three
Is for me to know and for thee
To find out
Oh, do not pout!

I am a non-smoker
And I like to play poker
No just kidding
Seemed more fitting

Now to end this rap
I had to fill the gap
And already told you more
Than I intended for

Word!

What’s in a Name?

Celebrating “Name Day”
Posted in humour, celebration

“Through the grayest of stones I’ll go”

What’s in a Name?

Given Name GUNILLA
GENDER: Feminine
USAGE: Swedish

Swedish variant of GUNHILD

OTHER LANGUAGES: Gunnhildr (Ancient Scandinavian), Gunhild (Danish), Gunhild, Gunnhild (Norwegian), Gunhilda (Scandinavian)

The meaning of the name “Gunilla” is: “Battle maiden”

concept_art__battle_maiden_by_espj_o-d6tw1gb
We Scandinavians have the funny habit of celebrating our “name days”. The names are dotted into the calendar and for each day, several names have their celebration. Today, on the thirtieth of January, is my name day: Gunilla. Also been called Gun, Gunu and Nilla. Not to mention the very popular “Gorilla”, back on the lower levels in school!
I found this very funny stuff on the world wide web, as if the name would define the character, but still some of it fits to my personality.

Enjoy!

Who is she?

Friendly and communicative, Gunilla has plenty of charm and magnetism. A sociable extrovert, she is pleasant, cheerful and very likable. She was born to express herself, interact with others and have a good time. She seeks the company of others and enjoys exchange and discussion, even though it is often a one-sided affair.

Gunilla goes through phases where, like the grasshopper in the fable she is inclined to an easy life of having fun and enjoying the pleasures of this world – which naturally entails a certain amount of dissipation… followed by other periods where she imitates the ant, bravely facing life´s challenges and capable of putting up with constraints as well as considerable effort, discipline and determination.

Gunilla is a concrete, materialistically orientated woman, who never loses sight of the financial side of life. She would therefore make a great business woman – persuasive and perspicacious, courageous and wise.

Encourage her creative streak and to make the most of her gift for communication through music, singing, theatre, literature or languages. It is important to compensate for her tendency to be fickle and spread herself too thinly by inculcating the value of order, method and discipline; she would benefit from experiencing the satisfaction of a job well done. Gunilla is endearing and… a real chatterbox.

What does she like?

As much as she enjoys the bright lights of society and the company of others, Gunilla nevertheless appreciates peace and quiet, security and stability. While she can appear sophisticated at times, she is more inclined to all that is natural, simple, sober and genuine. Security isn´t necessarily synonymous with routine, and Gunilla is a highly imaginative woman.

I Blog therefore I am

Today is my day off, so I have some extra time on my hands (Laughs out loud; good joke that one! While trying hard to catch up with a lo-oong list of uncompleted tasks!) I had to take the day off just to be on the safe side, and well prepared for the up and coming huge “Five O” day tomorrow. Readying myself for the celebration (read awaiting in horror of dooms day!) 😛

I have gotten a few questions on “how I manage to keep up and publish posts on daily basis” and decided to drop this little note to all you bloggers out there.

I promised myself a while back to write “at least” a poem a day, if nothing else and I have almost achieved that goal. I also try to post them daily, or then at least catch up the next day with a couple of posts. The writing is mostly for myself, but I am glad others enjoy it as well. It is also good to keep up with publishing(posting), so that your readers have something to come back to.
Let me share this one personal thing as to why now:

If I hadn’t started writing again earlier this year, I would probably have suffered a second burn out during my current career. For me, personally, both writing and photography are outlets to a hectic day at the office and, well, life in general. Sometimes I end up staying awake all the night typing away, even though knowing I have to go to work early in the morning. I still see it as time well spent. And, even though tired the next day, I feel happy and exhilarated for the simple fact I actually am producing something concrete and interesting, which unfortunately, doesn’t usually happen in the day job.

Quoting myself from one of my posts: “A poem a day keeps the shrink at bay.
A great guideline to follow and it is working for me at least.

My advice, in case you asked, is, to set yourself some thirty minute aside each day and if nothing else, pour your minds flow onto the paper or as it is in these modern days, in bits and bytes. I know this may sound like cliched advice, but it’s better to force yourself to a routine of writing rather than postponing it for one reason or another. I know there are always excuses as to why not, but in the end, if you have a passion for writing, the excuse are just that – excuses.
Hang in there and don’t stop writing, EVER!

“Dear Reader,

A blog about everything and nothing.
Fiction, fact, poetry, odes, homages, photography.
Humour, yet some serious thoughts.
And it’s all done in the best possible taste!

Enjoy!

It is one year since I wrote those words as I started the blog: Rantings Of A Third Kind. A thousand and one hundred and forty three posts later I am happily celebrating my one year anniversary for this blog.

Thank you all my followers and readers for the continued support and interest in “everything and nothing” as the blog tag line suggests. “It’s all done in the best possible taste” and hoping to continue along the same line!

Keep calm and keep reading Rantings!

In honour of today and the anniversary, I am reposting my first ever blog post:

plan a-b

“All the best laid plans…”

Let the rantings begin!

The old adage ‘Life is something, that happens when you are busy making other plans’ applies in most situations. Whether it is something you planned for the day or a bigger plan like your career from the time you finished school and started work life, the one thing you can be sure of is that nothing will go exactly the way you planned.

Rather than dwelling on the bigger plan, I would like to share some of the day-to-day experiences and how the adage ‘Well begun is half done’ does not always add up!

Sometimes something as simple as buying groceries may end up being a little more than you bargained for…

good intentions

A quick trip to the supermarket

I had planned to do my shopping for the week and finish working early to avoid the rush hour. Unfortunately my boss had other ideas: A rush job, which needed to be done urgently, today.

So, I changed my plans and stayed late. Guess my boss was the one with the bigger plan this time.

When I finally managed to sneak out, I got into my car and drove into the street. I had arrived just in time for the traffic jam! An endless sea of cars back to back with no way in or out from the roundabout. Well, I did not get to go to the carnival last time they were in town, so guess I could enjoy myself in a merry-go-round for a while, listening to my favourite tunes on the radio.

After a while the traffic had hardly moved an inch since I joined and the music station was more talk than tunes. Guess the radio station had the bigger plan this time.

I finally arrived at the supermarket after driving in a back-to-back traffic for much longer than I had planned to and was running late.

Now it was time for plan B: Park the car, get in and out from the store as quickly as possible and shop only what was on my well planned shopping list!

There were a few hick-ups in that plan: The car park was jammed and after circling it for the third or fourth time, I managed to get in time to queue in to a spot when another car was leaving. Secondly, all the shopping trolleys were in use.

While looking around I managed to find one standing there all by its lonesome. I soon found out why: When I pushed the trolley trying to move it to the right, the trolley went the opposite direction. Lastly, I had forgotten the well-planned shopping list on the kitchen table while leaving to work in a hurry when a well-planned morning had failed due to an unplanned phone call.

Best laid plans and all…

I finally got inside the store and was now moving towards the section where they sold the “home made cooking” type meals. I could already taste a well-grilled chicken in my mouth and made plans in my head on how to accessorize the dish. When it was my turn at the counter, and with a big grin made a request to purchase the chicken, there was nothing left but pork.

And so it was time for plan C: Go to the frozen food section and choose a chicken pizza.

After shopping was done and I had maneuvered my way out through the crowds of shoppers with my rickety trolley I finally reached the cash register. The customer before me put something on the conveyor belt that immediately caught my eye: ‘Closed, please move on to the next available register‘.

And then it was time for plan D. I moved to another register at the end of a very long line.

I was finally done with my shopping and heading towards the escalator on my way down to the parking lot. When I reached it, I noticed people pushing and pulling, some even lifting their trolleys. The reason was soon revealed to me, the escalator had stopped working and people were jammed in it and trying their hardest to get forward on the sticky non-moving machine.

So it was time for plan E: Take the lift.

After queuing for a lift ride for much longer than anticipated, I finally managed to get to my car, drive home and eat my frozen pizza. Did not enjoy it as much as I would have a well-cooked meal, but I was well-fed and ready to start planning my next day.

The lesson learned here is, you don’t always have to have a plan or be prepared for every situation. Live a little and remember that sometimes it’s good to just go with the flow.

As for myself, I still keep making my everyday plans!
